ROWCC CLUB PROFILES- CHAD FRY

Name: Chad fry

Member of ROCC since year: 2008
Climbing since year: April 2008
Relationship status:  Single
Birthday- We can add to calendar page on this website: 03-31-1975 (34yrs old)
Type of work- your job (if you are not JUST a climbing bum) : Project manager for AT&T, Construction and Engineering
Where do you live: Running Springs, CA
Home climbing area: Keller Peak, Lake Arrowhead Pinnacles

Do you belong to a climbing gym? Where?: Off & on at Hangar 18 in Riverside
Favorite place to climb: Alabama Hills, Lone Pine & City of Rocks, Idaho & Little Cottonwood, Utah
Favorite trip: Mt. Muir (13 pitches) and then summited Whitney that night in a snow storm. Made it back to camp at 2:30am. I led the Trough at Tahquitz only 3 weeks after my first climb and took someone up who only had 2 climbing days experience, I was so scared. Loved my trip to City of Rocks, Idaho. OH- been canyoneering a couple times in Zion- the best thing ever! Basically, every climbing trip is awesome :)
Trad, sport, boulder, ice, gym or all:  Trad and sport. Mostly just boulder in the gym
Favorite type of route (crack/face/slab) : I climb basically whatever someone tells me to climb
Climbing accomplishments: Mt. Muir, that’s my longest climb
Big walls: none
Other mountaineering or backpacking trips: Done some backpacking including Anza Borrego, Catalina, Deep Creek (Running Springs to Hesperia to Lake Arrowhead), Death Valley and J-Tree. Would like to do some multiday mountaineering trips. Have done one day trips up San G in the snow/ice.
Multi-day climbs: none, unless sumitting mt muir at dark and continuing to tag the summit of whitney after that counts. it started snowing on us and we didn't make it back to our camp til 2:30am!

Scariest incident: Leading a sport route and took about a 30' fall tumbling upside down and came pretty close to the ground before stopping. It was runout about 10' and I wasn't expecting about 30% rope stretch and slack. I definitely learned something that day!
Biggest fall:  see scariest incident above
Favorite Route(s) : Colossus- City of Rocks Idaho, Wheat Thin- City of Rocks Idaho
ROWCC awards received: none :( I had five areas within my first two months climbing but haven't got to ten yet!)
List of big climbs & of times completed: Mt Muir- 13 pitches

Countries climbed in: USA only
States climbed in: California, Utah & Idaho
Favorite climbing gear (shoes/clothes/trad gear/packs/food/etc) : I love my 2nd hand army camo pants and always wear them, unfortunately they don't show up well in photos. Multi-pitch I like my small nalgean on my harness and for trad gear, I love my small alien cams.

Favorite ROWCC moment: Leading the Trough in Tahquitz only three weeks after my very first climb ever. To top that off, my partner had only climbed twice and was scared of heights. When I first saw Tahquitz, I thought "oh man, I'm going to die today!" It was so intimidating, but I did it!
Ever spend an unexpected night out climbing? Please tell us about it:  Thank God no, not yet anyway. I remember being around the campfire with the ROWCC folks and everyone going around telling their "night on the rock" stories. I really don't want to do that! (seems like an inevitable thing however)
Other activities you enjoy besides climbing: Mountain and road biking, San Bernardino County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Snowboarding, waterskiing, backpacking, golf, racquetball, playing guitar, just got a saxophone (we’ll see how that goes)…
Personal accomplishments you’d like to share that aren’t climbing related: I am a member of the Sheriff Search and Rescue team in San Bernardino County up here on the mountain which I send a lot of time doing. I waterskied (3 event- slalom, trick & jump) competitively for ten years between 1992 and 2002. My best scores were slalom- 3 @ 35' off, 36mph / trick- 1700pts / jump- 83 feet.

Other things you’d like to share or see on this questionnaire: I made this questionnaire so if there was something I thought of, I already added it.
